Kolkata, May 18 (IBNS): Chanda Gayen from West Bengal's Howrah district climbed the Mount Everest on Saturday as she became the third woman from the state to achieve the feat.
The mountaineer from Kona village of Howrah followed the traditional south east ridge route through Nepal.
A telephonic message received from base camp at Solo Khumbu in Nepal was given by the agency which is handling her trip to confirm the news.
Chanda started her last part of journey for the summit from camp four at South Col on Friday night, followed the South East ridge route and reached the top at 7 a.m on Saturday.
Chanda is the third woman from West Bengal to climb Mount Everest after Kunga Bhutia from Darjeeling and Major (retired) Shipra Majumdar from Murshidabad achieved the same feat in 1994 and 2004 respectively.
Bachendri Pal was the first Indian woman to reach the top of world's highest mountain in 1984.
Chanda , who is in her mid-30s, began her climbing career through city based mountaineering club 'Institute of Exploration' and has completed basic and advanced mountaineering training and method of instruction course from Himalayan Mountaineering Institute in Darjeeling.
She also climbed Jogin I and III in Garhwal Himalaya during 2008 and Manirang in Himachal Pradesh last year.
Chanda in her present venture left Kolkata on Mar 28 and reached Base Camp at Solo Khumbu after trekking for seven days via Namche Bzar and Thayangboche.
It has been learnt that a number of climbers , both male and female from other Indian states including some from West Bengal , are now at higher camps and waiting for a fair weather window to have a go on the summit soon .
