Milkha Singh dreams of Olympic medal
Kolkata, Apr 27 (IBNS): Legendary runner Milkha Singh Saturday said it was his lifetime dream to see an athlete win a medal for India in the Olympics.
"What I could not achieve for the country (win a medal in Olympics), one of us should win at least for me as it is my lifetime dream, " Milkha Singh, also know as 'Flying Sikh' told a gathering while accepting the Lifetime Award, conferred on him by Bluyechip CSJC Annual award function at Town Hall here.
Milkha had clocked 45.60 sec in the 1960 Summer Olympics 400m race to (photo) finish fourth beaten by Malcolm Spence of South Africa for bronze.
He said, "Will power and hard work can make one everything achievable. I believe in that and what I achieved only for hard work and will power."
Milkha Singh, 77 said he hardly go anywhere to attend a function due poor eye sight and age, but he could not refuse the CSJC's invitation since the sportscribes give award to real achievers.
He said he declined to take Arjuna Award early this century while the then sports minister Uma Bharati had invited to take the same.
He said he was already awarded Padma Shree in 1969 and after that Arjuna Award was unnecessary.
The CSJC also handed over special awards to former India captains Sourav Ganguly and Bhiachung Bhutia, and best football award to Ranty Maritns, promsing footballer Lalrindika Ralte, and another special award to footballer Syed Rahim Nabi.
Best hockey award went to Guru Pratap Singh, Kirtika Singh Roy in TT, Sanu Debnath in swimming, Rakshena Khatun in volleyball, Arinta Das Gupta in badminton, Amrita Mukherjee in Tennis.
Best chess player award went to Mary an Gomes, and shooter Mumphy Das was awarded best junior sportsperson of the year. Best female award for Tuly Gon, a footballer.
The CSJC also felicitated veteran sports scribe Shyam Sundar Ghosh for his completing 50 years in journalism.
