Dravid's century takes India to commanding 346-5
KOLKATA, November 14: Rahul Dravid completed a century on Monday to take India to a commanding 346-5 against the West Indies on the opening day of the second Test at Eden Gardens.
Dravid struck 119 for his 36th Test century, adding 140 runs for the fourth wicket with V.V.S. Laxman, who was 73 not out at close. Night-watchman Ishant Sharma's first-ball dismissal was followed by a call by umpires to end the day's play due to bad light with 2.3 overs to go.
Dravid was out a delivery earlier when he inside-edged a delivery from part-time spinner Kraigg Brathwaite on to the stumps, after hitting nine fours and two sixes in a 207-ball knock.
Dravid made up for the failure of other batsmen to convert big scores and brightened India's chances of a deciding win in the three-game series after winning the opener in New Delhi by five wickets.
The 38-year-old Dravid, who stands fourth in the list of Test centurions behind Sachin Tendulkar (51), Jacques Kallis (40) and Ricky Ponting (39), got to the century with a clipped four to long-leg off a no-ball from pace bowler Kemar Roach.
Starting fluently to reach 33 off 51 balls with six fours by lunch, Dravid slowed down in a bid to consolidate the team's position during the second session, in which he hit a solitary four and scored only 29 runs from 77 balls.
He broke the shackles when he lofted leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo for a six over long-off a little after tea. His other six came to long on off Marlon Samuels soon after.
Laxman gave him fine support and had hit five fours off 116 balls so far in his 56th Test half-century.
Dravid was also associated in partnerships of 83 for the second wicket with Gautam Gambhir (65) and of 56 for the third with Tendulkar (38), who remains stuck on 99 international centuries.
Tendulkar pulled a short delivery from Bishoo straight to Samuels at mid-wicket after surviving a close lbw appeal against the same bowler when on 25.
Tendulkar came in to bat in the second session, after the opening pair of Virender Sehwag and Gambhir dominated proceedings to raise expectations of a big total. (Agencies)
