Bopanna looking ahead with new partner Mahesh Bhupathi
CHENNAI, December 28:?Doubles specialist Rohan Bopanna hopes the camaraderie he shares with new partner Mahesh Bhupathi will translate into success on court.
"I have known Hesh (Bhupathi) since I played my first Davis Cup match in 2002, so we go back a long way. We share an excellent rapport. From my experience with Aisam, I know that being friends pays rich dividends on the court," Bopanna (doubles ranking 11) said on Tuesday.
The duo had announced their association in December - following the split between Bhupathi (ranked 7) and Leander Paes (8) - saying their primary target would be the London Olympics this coming July. Their joint venture will take off at the Chennai Open - where they are the top seeds. The team of Paes and Janko Tipsarevic is seeded second.
"It feels good to start off the season in front of our home crowd. It's great to be considered the favourites, but the tag comes with its own share of expectations and pressure. I am also eagerly looking forward to the London Olympics. We are taking a month off after Wimbledon to prepare for the Olympics," Bopanna said.
Doubles success, however, has continued to elude Bopanna at the Chennai Open. In five appearances, he has made just one final, in the company of Prakash Amritraj, in 2006.
"The Chennai Open is always a challenging tournament as it is the beginning of the season and coming from the off-season, you have to find you rhythm from the start to do well," he concluded. (Agencies)
