Prof. Abdur Raheem no more, we miss you Sir

Prof Abdur Raheem ex Head of the Department of Journalism & Communication, Osmania University breath his last this morning at around 5 am at a corporate hospital in Hyderabad. He is survived by his wife, three daughters and two sons. Raheem Bhai ,as he was popularly called by not only his friends but also students was born on 19th October 1944, did his MA and MCJ from Osmania University, Later he joined the same University where he studied, to teach Journalism in 1972, and retired from there as HoD in 2004. Any one who even met him once instantly became his admirer because of his charisma, he was always very attentive and soft spoken, always ready to help other and very humble. This was very much evident when his admirers organized a series of functions to honour and felicitate him in recognition of his selfless service. He never went for any favours from power lobby. The other side of Raheem bhai was very contrasting, being a journalist and social scientist he fought for the cause of others especially the down trodden and minorities, due to this characteristic he was not liked by power brokers. Infact most of the so called self styled leaders were always scared by him.
The Hyderabad Deccan is the only news paper , Raheem bhai agreed to become its Chief Patron and we are always thankful to him for his kind gesture.
He was also associated with more than a dozen organizations, he was founder member of small and medium news papers federation , Chairman Bharath Samachar, Chairman Press Media, Vice President Commonwealth Association of Education in Communication and Journalism (CAEJAC), Secretary South Asian Media Association (SAMA) Indian chapter & member Namedia New Delhi, Chief Patron Andhra Pradesh Urdu Journalist Association (APUJA), Andhra Pradesh Urdu Teachers Association Hyderabad , Free Press Editors Federation, Free press Federation, Convenor Andhra Pradesh Wakf Forum and A P weekly Editors Association.
Besides this Raheem bhai was very active in academic activities, even after his retirement from OU, presently he was board member of School of Journalism of Aligarh Muslim University, Moulana Azad national Urdu University and Marathwada University of Aurangabad. He has lead many research teams and himself did research projects which includes "Urdu Press in south India'. "Media Use and effects on social harmony', " Role of Urdu news papers in the voting behavior of Muslims in AP state general elections 1994'.
He was also a well traveled person went to many countries, like USA, UK, Canada, Malaysia to deliver lectures which includes lecture at Oxford University of UK. He was author of several books on Journalism and social issues, some of them are; Chapter on Islam in "Islam and the contemporary Muslims' named " Islam and western press' also contributed chapter on "Practice of Antyodaya in Extension Communication in India' in "Communication Theory: Eastern and Western Perspectives' published by Light of life Publication and Academic Press Inc USA respectively.
