Priyanka, Jayaveena set meet marks; Karnataka on top

BHOPAL, August 5: As expected, Karnataka ended the day atop the medals tally but the efforts of the Tamil Nadu swimmers kept Maharashtra back when four meet records, including two in relays, were re-written on the opening day of the 38th National junior aquatic championship here on Friday.
Five golds for TN
Out of 16 gold medals on offer on this day, Tamil Nadu fished out five from the Prakash Taran Pushkar pool here, just one less than overwhelming favourite Karnataka. Maharashtra, not expected to challenge Karnataka's run here, could manage just three titles to trail in the third spot.
Delhi's Priyanka Priyadarshini set the first individual record of the day by shattering Ambica Iyengar's eight-year-old record in 100m breaststroke in Group I. Priyanka clocked 1:19.31 in the heats to erase the record of 1:19.50. She returned in the evening to improve her record 1:17.77 in the final. This effort came minutes before Priyanka's last year's record in Group II stood broken.
Heavy rains failed to dampen the spirits of Tamil Nadu girl A.V. Jayaveena as she erased Priyanka's record 1:20.32 in 1:19.02 in the 100m breaststroke in group II.
Karnataka boys set up all four individual golds for the State while Tamil Nadu gained from its showing in Group II in both sections. Haryana's Shivani Kataria exceeded expectations by winning the 200m freestyle gold in Group II. (Agencies)

Eka Veera postponed to March 2

Hyderabad, Feb 23 (INN): The discipline of old times is gone, so it appears. When a commitment is given people used to stick to that. Arm twisting by biggies is not a new phenomenon but still there was respect for values.

Now everything is done in a huff, from launch to pack-up, audio to result. What is more surprising is films are getting delayed, postponed and badly bruised.

Of late there have been many films that deferred the date of release due to what has come to be known as post production work. Announcing the date first and working at breakneck speed has become a fad which will have its ill-effects.

Dabbawallas will take a day off on August 16

Mumbai, August 5: Extending support to social activist Anna Hazare over the Lokpal Bill issue, Mumbai's famous dabbawallas (lunch-box carriers) on Friday said there would be no service on August 16, the day he proposed to start his hunger strike.
About 4,500-5,000 dabbawallas transport some 2,00,000 homemade lunch packs every day at a very low fee and with surprising punctuality. But not on August 16.
"We support Anna Hazare in his fight for the strong Lokpal Bill. On August 16, when Annaji would go on a fast, we have decided to show our support by asking our customers not to give tiffins for delivery,' said President o .... Read More
