Chowmein behind rising rapes: Khap
Jind, Oct 16 (IBNS): A week after a Khan Panchayat in Haryana suggested to reduce the marriageable age of girls to 16 in order to combat the rising rape cases in the state, another leader has blamed consumption of fast foods like 'chowmein' as the reason behind such incidents.
"To my understanding, consumption of fast food contributes to such incidents. Chowmein leads to hormonal imbalance evoking an urge to indulge in such acts," Jitender Chhatar, a resident of Jind's Chhatar village and thua khap panchayat leader, was quoted as saying to TOI.
"You also know the impact of chowmein, which is a spicy food, on our body. Hence, our elders also advised to consume light and nutritious food," he said.
A Khap Panchayat in Haryana last week reportedly said marriageable age for girls should be decreased to 16 for reducing rape cases in the north Indian state.
Khap Panchayat is a council of village elders who exercise significant amount of control over social norms and traditions in Indian villages.
Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi last week rejected the recommendations of the Khap Panchayat on the issue of marriage saying 'the law is in the hands of the judiciary'.
"We have a democratic system here. We have a judiciary. The law is in the hands of the judiciary and nobody else," Gandhi told reporters on Tuesday.
Several rape cases have incidents have occurred in the state in the past one month.
