Assam floods: 15 lakh people affected


Guwahati, Sept 24 (IBNS): Three people including a woman drowned in flood waters in Assam on Monday as situation in the northeastern state continued to grow grimmer, officials said.

A women drowned at Goreswar area, while other two people were killed in Sonitpur and Sivasagar district.

According to the Assam state Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) report, 15,38,516 people of 2,055 villages of 15 districts have been affected till Monday.

The administration of 15 districts had set up 191 relief camps with 3,38,300 inmates.

"Brahmaputra and other tributaries have been flowing above the danger level mark in Guwahati, Dhubri, Sonitpur, Lakhimpur," an official of Water Resource Department said.

Flood waters inundated new areas in Nagaon and Morigaon district on Monday.

People were forced to leave their homes and take shelter on higher lands and relief camps.

The Army and helicopters of the Indian Air Force (IAF) have been engaged in rescue operations.

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, who is on a Japan tour, ordered state government officials and concerned district administrations to take all measures for flood affected people.

Meanwhile, 115 forest camps of Kaziranga National Park have been submerged in flood waters.

The park authorities had taken safety measures for animals and introduced time card at NH-37.

A one-horned rhinoceros was poached inside the park on Monday.

The Dhemaji district was cut off from rest of the nation since September 15 as breached at NH-52.

Several areas of Guwahati city were submerged in flood waters on Monday.
