Kolkata, Dec 9 (IBNS) Minister of State for Railways Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury Sunday formally began the work for developmnear of Santragachi, an important station near Howrah on Kolkata's outskirts, as a major Passenger Terminal.
He also inaugurated the work for development of a Coaching Terminal at Shalimar.
The Minister flagged off Adra-Asansol MEMU train and made formal announcement of Adra-Bishnupur MEMU Train.
Speaking on the occasion, Chowdhury said that the existing Howrah terminal is saturated and with the line expansion and increase in number of trains to take place in the years to come, development of Santragachi, close to Howrah Terminal, as a major Passenger Terminal had become imperative.
Similarly, work of developing a Coaching Terminal at Shalimar is being undertaken as the existing terminal of Howrah had become saturated owing to the increase in the number of passenger trains, he said.
Chowdhury expressed the hope that both the works would be completed by June, 2015.
