Statewide Suprise Check on Welfare Hostels by ACB
Hyderabad, 7 Dec (Hyderabad Deccan News): The A.C.B. conducted surprise checks on SC/ST/BC Welfare Hostels throughout the State on 06.12.2010. A total of 30 hostels were checked by ACB teams. The surprise check revealed various irregularities in maintenance and up-keep of these hostels. The check also revealed misappropriation of funds by respective Hostel Welfare Officers by inflating the strength of boarders, who were fictitious/dropouts/long-absentees. As per record the number of boarders enrolled in these hostels is 4425 and 4035 boarders were shown as present on the day of check. However, physical verification by ACB revealed the presence of only 2771 boarders on 6.12.2010.
The Government sanctions Rs. 14-17 per student per day as diet charges. The perusal of stock register revealed that the hostel welfare officers had shown provisions as drawn on the inflated strength thereby misappropriating the diet charges in respect of absent boarders. Misappropriation of other funds like cosmetic charges etc. was also noticed in a number of hostels.
The quality of food was generally found to be poor and not as per prescribed menu. The general up-keep and maintenance of these hostels was found to be unsatisfactory. A detailed report will soon be sent to the Government.
