Implementation process of energy conservation initiatives
Hyderabad November 13 (Hyderabad Deccan news) : Since the energy efficiency and energy conservation is one of the paramount measures in achieving energy security in the State, the Energy Dept., Govt. of A.P. have decided to involve all stakeholders in the implementation process of energy conservation initiatives of power utilities. With this, the Govt. is expected to achieve not only reduction in electricity wastage considerably, but also to tackle the ever growing peak-hour power demand to some extent.
The State Govt. which have already taken several steps to achieve the targeted results through energy conservation, is going to finalize the action plan on energy conservation and energy efficiency soon in order to face the unprecedented demand to some extent and to put efforts to supply reliable & quality power to the consumers of the State. In view of tremendous scarcity of natural resources like coal, gas, etc., Govt. of India suggested all states including A.P., to fully gear up to implement energy conservation measures to bridge the gap between demand and supply to some extent as it is a big challenge for the power utilities in the next 5 years to meet the ever increasing demand in various sectors like Industry, Commercial, Transport, domestic, and agriculture.
Sri Dinesh Kumar, Principal Secretary, Energy Dept. in several review meetings with top officials of power sector emphasized that energy conservation is the need of the hour and mentioned that 1 unit energy saved is equal to 1.2 units energy generated. AP Govt. have achieved the installed capacity of 15,768 MW as against 14,750 MW last year. It is significant to note that 10 years back i.e. 2000-2001, the Installed Capacity of A.P. was just 7974 MW. Even though the State has increased its installed capacity considerably, the gap between demand and supply still persists. It is estimated that the Demand-supply gap over the next three years will be abnormally high with an average power deficit of 3,245 MW by that time.
Almost all states in the Country are facing severe power shortages/constraints in bridging the gap between demand & supply and competing to procure power through open market/power exchange. During recent times, the A.P, which is committed for consumer service, have procured power at a cost in the rage of Rs. 6 to 10 per unit to meet the demand and supplied power to industries just at Rs. 4.07 on an average. Keeping the above factors in view, the Energy Dept., initiated two key objectives i.e. enhancement of generation capacity of around 4500 MW in future & further reduction of Transmission and Distribution (T&D) losses including commercial losses to the maximum extent possible and decided to encourage all stakeholders/consumers of around 2.35 Crores to invariably conserve energy, which is precious than gold.
A.P. Govt. is determined to achieve the gigantic task of saving 20% of power in all sectors. The Prominent sectors where conservation is feasible through effective measures are Industry - 7%, Agriculture-4.5%, domestic-6% and other sectors-2.5%.
