'Govt was committed to welfare of BCs'

Hyderabad, May 30(Hyderabad Deccan News): The Cabinet Sub-Committee on BC Reservations has favoured continuation of 34 percent quota for BCs in local body elections without any cut in the earlier reservation.
The Cabinet sub-committee,comprised of the Ministers Mr Jana Reddy, Mr Pitani Satyanarayana, Mr Basavaraju Saraiah and Mr Bosta Satyanarayana, met on Monday in the Chamber of Mr Jana Reddy in the Secretariat.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, the Minister for Social Welfare, Mr Pitani Satyanarayana said that the Supreme Court verdict that the reservations should not cross 50 percent would apply to Karnataka State, but not had any relation with our state. Referring to the allegations of BC Associations that the Government was planning to reduce the BC quota to 24 percent from the present 34 percent, he tried to ally their apprehensions saying the Government was not having any such plans. He reminded that the State Government was committed to welfare of BCs and ensure their participation in all fields.
The Minister for BC Welfare, Mr Basavaraju Saraiah said that with regard to the SCs and STs, their quota was fixed. But, the issue was only BC reservation. The Supreme Court verdict on reservation was only binding on Karnataka, but not to other states. Hence, the question of reduction of BC quota in the State will not arise, he added. He also informed that the Panchayat Raj elections would be held as per the schedule.
