Citizens, police lauded for keeping peace as city returns to normalcy
Hyderabad, Oct 1 (Hyderabad Deccan News): Normal activity in the Old City resumed after 3:00 pm on Friday after the prayers passed off peacefully in all sensitive areas after the curfew-like scenes witnessed on Thursday. Even as the Friday prayers passed off peacefully, barring a protest by the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen Legislator Ahmed Pasha Quadri on the preponing of the Friday prayers, allegedly on the orders of Commissioner of Police AK Khan. The Police chief was seen personally supervising security arrangements at the Mecca Masjid, in view the fear that communal harmony could be disrupted in the aftermath of the verdict by the Allahabad High Court on the Babri Masjid title suit. According to Professor Aminuddin Khan, citizens, both Hindus and Muslims had shown remarkable restraint in light of the verdict, first by resorting to public celebrations and by not resorting to violent protests. Senior journalist DVS Sharma was all praise for both the police who efficiently managed to control the situation by tightening the security in the city, particularly in sensitive areas and nipping any trouble in the bud, and also the citizens for respecting the feelings of the members from the other community and not indulging in any act which could have potentially triggered off a chain of unfortunate events. Meanwhile, Mr Khan told media persons that there will be no let up in the security till the administration is confident that the situation is completely under control. The police chief added that Section 144 will be lifted soon if the citizens continue to maintain peace, harmony and tranquility.
