Ban on 50-Micron Thick Plastic Bags under study: Minister
Hyderabad, Aug 31 2009 (THD NEWS): The Minister for Forests and Environment, Mr P Ramachandra Reddy, on Monday told the Assembly that a ban on 50-micron thick plastic carry bags was under examination of the government. Replying to a question during the Question Hour, Mr Reddy said that the government has already imposed a ban on the usage of 20-micron thick plastic carry bags in the interests of environmental protection. He pointed out that the disintegration of plastic carry bags would take decades and cause environmental pollution. The people have been encouraged to use paper or cotton and jute bags instead of plastic carry bags, he added. The minister said that the government was taking measures to check air pollution level in the city. He pointed out that residential areas have been developed around factories in some areas for rapid growth. Following the proposal made by the Pollution Control Board (PCB), the government has taken steps to close down 50 industries in the Katedan where the units were polluting the Noorkunta, he added. He also said that there was no report about the industrial pollution in Amberpet area. He pointed out that the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Development Corporation (APIIC) has set up an environmental cell to take measures to curtail industrial pollution. The government also earmarked Rs 50 crores in the Budget for Environmental Management Fund, he added.
