A.P. to get additional capacity of 250 MW by April, 2012 from NTPC
Hyderabad, December 23/2011 (Hyderabad Deccan News): To tied over the major constraint of getting power from other regions to meet the demand, today the Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) has agreed the proposal of Govt. of A.P. to increase the transmission corridor by 500 MW for 10 hours per day up to May, 2012 in Southern Region. This will enable APTRANSCO to draw more power from January to May, 2012 from Eastern Region to reduce the power shortage to some extent. In this regard, Ajay Jain, CMD/APTRANSCO, has raised the issue of corridor availability and convinced the PGCIL, Ministry Of Power, Govt. of India.
The Southern Regional Power Committee (SRPC) meeting is held today at Green Park, Hyderabad and participated by the representatives of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Pondicherry States. During the meeting, they have requested the Central Govt. to provide corridor between Southern Region (SR) and Northern, Eastern and Western (N,E,W) grid and asked PGCIL to expedite the works of transmission substation and lines between SR, and WR/ER to enable adequate power flow from other regions to SR. At present APTRANSCO is availing the transmission corridor facility up to 750 MW and additional corridor facility of 500 MW will be added to SR.
During the SRPC meeting, all the generators (NTPC, NPCIL, NLC) were asked to complete the overhauling of its thermal stations by December, 2011 end, so that maximum generation can be obtained from January to May, 2012, which are crucial months for power supply. SRPC has also agreed the proposal of APGENCO MD, K. Vijayanand to depute a special team to Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd., on behalf of the Southern Regional power utilities to discuss the issue of supply of adequate coal supplied to the thermal power stations in the region. APGENCO also requested SRPC to take up the matter with Coal India also to settle the problem, he requested.
Before attending the SRPC meeting, Ajay Jain CMD/APTRANSCO, K. Vijayanand, MD/APGENCO have explained Dinesh Kumar, Prl. Secretary to Govt., Energy Dept., the key issues to be discussed at the 18th SRPC meeting like transmission corridor, coal supply position, maintenance of grid frequency, etc. Prl. Secretary reminded that Hon'ble Chief Minister was concerned over the settlement of availability of transmission corridor problem to import power during peak demand. During the SRPC meeting, the top officials of the NTPC have disclosed that NTPC Simhadri unit II 500 MW is expected to be commissioned by March, 2012 and A.P. would get a share of around 190 MW from this and NTPC TNEB 3 x 500 MW Vallur first unit will be commissioned in April, 2012 (AP share 60 MW) thereby AP will get an additional 250 MW of power by April, 2012.
SRPC also expressed serious concern over the availability of coal at various thermal power stations of NTPC, Neyveli Lignite Corporation Ltd. (NLC). AP has pointed out that due to non-availability of adequate coal and not able to maintain coal stocks even for 1 or 2 days at NTPC Talcher. AP is loosing its share of around 100 MW. Members of SRPC expressed serious concerned over the unusual increase in demand to the extent of 10-20% and requested all southern states to limit their power schedules and strictly maintain grid frequency & discipline. Mr. T. Manoharan, Chairman Kerala SEB & Chairman SRPC, Mr. Ravi Kumar, CMD/KPTCL, Mr. Yogendra Tripati, MD/KPCL, Mr. Vidyasagar Reddy, CMD/APSPDCL, Mr. Shekhar, ED/PGCIL, and other senior officials of CEA, PGCIL, NTPC, NPCIL, NLC & four southern utilities participated in the SRPC meeting.
Sri Ajay Jain, CMD/APTRANSCO thanked the chairman of SRPC on behalf of the Govt. of A.P. for conducting its 18th meet at Hyderabad to resolve various key issues pertaining to power sector.
