Molasses extract helps in reducing obesity

Sydney, July 12 : Supplementing your diet with a molasses extract could help you shed weight or reduce obesity, say researchers
The study, conducted on mice by Richard Weisinger at the La Trobe University, Australia, investigated the impact of adding molasses extract to a high fat diet.
Mice were given either an unaltered high fat diet, or the same diet supplemented with two percent or four percent molasses extract, according to a statement by the university.
After 12 weeks on these diets, mice that consumed the diet containing four percent molasses extract had lower body weight, reduced body fat, and decreased blood levels of leptin, a hormone produced by fat cells.
"The addition of molasses extract to a high fat diet appears to reduce body weight and body fat levels primarily through reduced caloric absorption," said Weisinger.
"Clinical trials scheduled next year will provide the opportunity to evaluate the efficacy of molasses extract for weight control in humans," he added.
Molasses extract is rich in polyphenols, a group of chemical compounds found in plants that are known for their antioxidant properties, believed to play a role in the prevention of cancer, coronary heart disease and even altitude sickness.
These findings will be presented at the annual meeting of the Society for the Study of Ingestive Behavior (SSIB) which started Tuesday at Florida, US. (Agencies)

3 Simple Steps to Decreasing Your Risk of Stroke

(NewsUSA) - Four out of five victims of a stroke saw no obvious warning signs -- meaning 80 percent of adults who suffered a stroke had no idea they could have managed their risk factors, according to the National Stroke Association.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says stroke has become the fourth leading killer in the U.S. If adults can't rely on warning symptoms to point to signs of a stroke, they should take stroke prevention into their own hands. Many of the most significant risk factors are controllable.

Obese kids 'face triple the risk of having high BP'

Washington, Sept 04 : Parents beware. Children who are overweight or obese compared to their peers are nearly three times more likely to have high blood pressure, warns a new study.
Wanzhu Tu, Ph.D., from Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, and colleagues followed a total of 1,111 healthy schoolchildren with a mean age of 10.2 years children over a period of 4.5 years.
They found that when the children's body mass index (BMI) reached or passed the 85th percentile - the beginning of the overweight category - the adiposity effect on blood pressure was more than four times that of normal weight children.
