HIV positive ratio declines marginally


Mumbai, Jun 20: The HIV positive ratio has declined marginally owing to provision of free medicines and public awareness campaigns from the Mumbai district Aids control society (MDACS) last year.
Dr Harish Pathak, additional project director of MDACS, told UNI that ''The HIV positive ratio has declined marginally during last year as compared to the previous years after providing free medicines to the patients at seven centres across the city, coupled with effective awareness campaigns of the organization''.
''Our volunteers are doing awareness campaigns among commercial sex worker (CSW) in red light areas to encourage the use of condoms in their profession'', he said.
Dr Pathak also informed that currently free medicines are provided in centres at J J Hospital, KEM hospital, Nair hospital, Sion hosppital and also in private collaboration with L and T, and Godrej hospital.
The organisation is also planning to launch three more centres at Satabdi hospital, Govandi, M T Agrawal hospital, Mulund, and Siddharth Hospital at Goregaon, he added.
Among blood donors, HIV positive people have decreased over the last few years. The blood donation increased from 10,7226 in 2005 to 19,83,15 in 2010 and the HIV positivity rate has decreased from 0.63 percent (2005) to 0.43 percent last year, he added. (Agencies)
